The 101st edition of Veritons Song Contest has come to an end two days ago, when Israel was crowned winner with the song "Pray to God" by HAIM and Calvin Harris. While the song itself belongs more to the Western world of music, HAIM sisters have hebrew origins and they were proud to bring a new style that represented Israel.
The sisters grew up in a musical family, and began playing instruments from an early age in cover bands with their parents. They began performing as Haim in 2007, but did not seriously consider a professional career for some years. Este graduated with a degree in Ethnomusicology, while Danielle became a successful touring guitarist with Jenny Lewis and The Strokes' frontman, Julian Casablancas, on his solo tours. This led to Haim resuming as a full-time operation in 2012.
While they are currently living in the United States, they never forget the origins of their father and the values they were raised into. For their first gig, the trio played at a Jewish deli in Hollywood and were paid in matzah ball soup.
The song "Pray to God" by the Scottish DJ and record producer Calvin Harris, featuring vocals from American rock trio Haim enjoyed moderate commercial success, reaching the top-ten in Australia, whilst claiming a top-forty position in the United Kingdom (only his second single to miss the top ten since 2010). It received 127 points.
While Israel claimed the victory, the runner-up award of this edition went to Australia, the country managing to get back in top 3 after recent flops. "You Don't Own Me" received 98 points. The song is also the debut single by Australian singer and songwriter Grace. It features American rapper G-Eazy.
It was released on 17 March 2015 one month after Lesley Gore died, and peaked at number one on the ARIA Charts, later being certified 3× Platinum by the ARIA. The song was also a success in New Zealand, peaking at number five for two consecutive weeks, and in the United Kingdom, peaking at number four.
Finally, the top 3 was completed by the host-country, Germany. "Supergirl" is the debut single from the German band Reamonn. The song is from their first studio album Tuesday. It was written by the complete band and produced by Steve Lyon. The single was released on 27 March 2000 by Virgin Schallplatten and was later certified Gold in German.
In 2015, German singer Anna Naklab released a cover version featuring Alle Farben and YOUNOTUS which gained chart success in Germany too and even outsold the original in the artist's home country
Interesting to note, the entire top 3 consists of songs that charted pretty well and they are modern sounding. Not only that, but 2nd and 3rd place are covers of previous famous and loved songs.
Israel is already super excited to host the next edition and welcomes us all in Jerusalem, the Jewel of the Middle East!
